Deerfield Fence Permit Requirements
The Village of Deerfield requires a permit to install a new fence or replace sections of an existing one. A permit is not required for changes to an existing fence, for replacing a fence whose original permit is on file, or for invisible underground fences.
A fence permit application typically includes:
- A completed building permit application with homeowner and contractor details, the estimated cost, and the fence type and height
- Two copies of your plat of survey, marked in color to show the fence location and height
- A copy of the proposal or exact project cost
Key rules to plan around:
- Fences can be up to 3 feet tall in the front yard and up to 7 feet in side and rear yards. The front yard is the side facing the shortest street dimension of the lot, which isn't always the side your front door faces.
- Fences around pools and hot tubs must be at least 4 feet high and enclose the pool area or the property perimeter.
- Fences can go up to your property line but must sit entirely on your lot, and the finished side can face in or out.
- Barbed wire and exposed electrified wire are not permitted.
- Call J.U.L.I.E. at 1-800-892-0123 to locate buried utilities before any digging.
Permits take about 10 working days to process. The base fee is $50, plus an infrastructure impact fee of 0.5% of the project cost.
