Fort Sheridan is one of the North Shore’s most distinctive residential communities, with homes set among mature trees, ravines, and the Lake Michigan bluff. The former military post now includes a mix of historic residences, townhomes, condos, and duplexes across Fort Sheridan in Highland Park, Highwood, and Lake Forest.
That setting makes every fence project a little different. Known as The Guy on 41, Fenceworks has been installing fences throughout Fort Sheridan. Whether you want to improve backyard privacy, mark your property line, or refresh an aging fence line, we can help you choose the right material, plan a layout that fits your lot, and install a fence built to last.

Fort Sheridan Fence Installation Permit Process
Completed building permit applications shall be personally delivered to Village Hall. The Building Inspector shall determine if the application illustrates compliance with the Ordinance. Building Inspector will determine the fee and it will be due upon receipt of an approved Building Permit. Anyone who decides to cancel their permit application after the Building Inspector has already completed a site inspection, then they will be responsible for the cost of the Building Inspector's time and refunded the balance.
Please allow up to 10 days for the application to be processed prior to receiving a Building Permit - some projects may take longer.
It is the owner's responsibility to check the setback requirements prior to building. Complete Zoning Ordinances are available for review at Village Hall or at Robert W. Rowe Public Library. You may also use the following link to access the Zoning Ordinance book.
Fence Styles for Your Fort Sheridan Property
A fence should work with the property, not fight against it. That matters in Fort Sheridan, where the landscape can change quickly from established residential streets to wooded ravines, bluff areas, and open views toward Lake Michigan.
Over here, we offer the following types of fences:
- PVC/vinyl fencing
- Wood fencing
- Aluminum fencing
- Chain Link fencing
- Composite fencing
PVC and Vinyl Fencing
Vinyl holds up well on Fort Sheridan's wooded, moisture-heavy lots since it does not rot or need repainting after a wet season near the ravines. It is a common choice for homeowners who want a clean, consistent line around a pool or play area without ongoing upkeep.
Wood Fencing
Wood fencing suits the neighborhood's historic character, especially on properties near the Fort Sheridan Historic District where homeowners want a fence that complements the original brick and masonry architecture.
Fenceworks custom-builds wood fences at your home, allowing the design to be adapted to the property rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all panel. With multiple styles available, you can easily choose one to define outdoor living spaces while maintaining a classic look.
Aluminum Fencing
Aluminum fencing works well for open, view-friendly boundaries near the forest preserve and parade ground areas, where homeowners want a defined property line without blocking sightlines to mature trees or open lawn. Aluminum resists rust and holds its shape through Lake County winters.
Chain Link Fencing
Chain link fence provides a straightforward, budget-conscious option for securing yards, pet areas, or side lots. It's a practical choice for homeowners who prioritize function over appearance in less visible parts of the property.
Composite Fencing
Our composite fence panels combine wood-plastic composite boards with interlocking aluminum posts, giving Fort Sheridan homeowners a low-maintenance option that blends with the neighborhood's tree-lined streets.
Fence Repair & Maintenance
Fort Sheridan's landscape can put different demands on a fence depending on where it sits. Properties near ravines may experience soil movement as the ground freezes and thaws. Fences closer to the lakefront can also face stronger and more consistent wind exposure than those farther inland. This can affect the stability of your fence over time.
Our experienced team addresses leaning posts, loose panels, damaged gates, and fading finishes, restoring the fence's safety, appearance, and day-to-day performance rather than just patching the visible problem.
Backyard Projects in Fort Sheridan
Beyond fencing, Fenceworks helps Fort Sheridan families turn their backyards into spaces built for everyday play. Our outdoor playsets and trampolines give kids room to climb, swing, jump, and burn off some energy right at home.
If basketball is more their speed, our in-ground and wall-mounted basketball hoops create a dedicated spot for shooting around, practicing skills, and playing pickup games.
Our team helps determine the best placement, ensures adequate clearance, and installs your backyard equipment correctly for stability and safe play. We make sure it feels like a natural part of your outdoor space.
